Mexico Surf Camp in Salina Cruz
Salina Cruz, Mexico Surf Camp Overview
Located between Salina Cruz and Huatulco, this surf travel package is home to some of the hollowest waves in the world. This region is one of the "last surf frontiers in Mexico" and is famous for the strong swells that named Puerto Escondido [a.k.a. "Mexican Pipeline”]. Other than Puerto Escondido this area has an abundance of perfect right hand points with sand bottoms, rock reefs and jetties. No crowds, just you and your friends surfing empty warm water perfection all day! There are more than fifteen breaks in the area and most of them are very remote and unknown.
It takes local knowledge of the area to score the best conditions. Our staff has lived and surfed here for more than 20 years. Accessing these surf spots can be tricky depending on the wind and swell direction, working with the current tide conditions.
The surf in this region ranges from beginner to expert ability level. This location is ideal for short boarding and body boarding with only a few long board spots. Have you dreamed about surfing epic waves in warm water with no crowd? We can make that happen!! For more information about surf trips to Salina Cruz, Mexico, please contact us. All prices are detailed below.
The Surfing
Southern Coast: This area has very strong N to NE winds from October to March caused by a high-pressure gradient between the Gulf of Mexico and the North and Pacific Ocean. These winds blow in ranges of 25-35 knots almost every week, and blowout the surf in the area, but from April to October the wind diminishes to less than 15 knots. From April to October is when consistent 4-6 ft swells wrap into the region with strong 6-12 ft swells arrive almost once every two weeks. There are 10 different surf breaks to choose from, so crowds are hard to come by. Most of the spots are so remote and unknown that rarely do you even see other surfers. The surf camp is located in Salina Cruz that's in this region.
This area is in the Huatulco surroundings and it’s located about 1.5 hours north from Salina Cruz. There are some 5 different surf breaks in this region. The area has wind protection and offers year-round good surfing conditions, best in the mornings, however many of the points hold their shape throughout the day. The most consistent swells are from March to early November when the surf turns into 4-6 foot swells with bigger 8-12 ft swells possible. This area provides a reliable option when the swell is small or wind blown in the southern region.
Southern Coast Surf Spots
Spot #1: Excellent beach break with prevailing off shores all year round. Best on low tide and on small-medium size and SW swells. Breaks to the right and left.
Spot #2: A beautiful right-hand point break with rides up to 300 meters. A super fun wave for classic long boarding and progressive short boarding
Spot #3: The most hollow and powerful jetty wave in the zone, with a dry takeoff, and super long tube section. No rooms for mistakes or you’re going to finish on the rocks. Sometimes, especially on weekends you’ll find 3-5 local surfers or body-boarders with friendly attitudes. Respect, cool vibe and traditional lineup system with surfers alternating turns is needed to surf here. Only experienced surfers.
Spot #4: One of the best waves in the zone, a super long wave with 2 take off areas, a hollow section at the first part of the wave and a bowlier take off down the line. Best on low tide and on 4-6 foot South swell.
Spot #5: Right-hand wave, fun for beginners and Long-boarding.
Spot #6: Another aggressive right-hand point break, starts to work at 5’+ and larger swells. Best on low tide and SW swells.
Spot #7: Super fast and tricky point break wave. Ideal for short-boarding or body boarding, dream tubes on excellent conditions. Starts to work only at 6 ft.
Spot #8: Hollow right-hander off the jetty. Very powerful wave. Best on Low tide. Better wind protection than some of the other points, and more consistent.
Spot #9: Is located at 200m from the No. 8 but is longer and trickier wave that works with the same conditions.
Spot #10: A hollow right-hand point-break accessible only by boat.
Northern Coast Surf Spots
La Jolla: A right-hand sand point break, the most famous wave in the area. This wave can barrel all the way down presenting one of the longest rides in Mexico. The crowd factor is 10-15 surfers on a crowded day. If the surf is from 6-8 ft the crowd becomes less of a problem due to the amount of waves. (There are some strong currents on big swells)
Spot #2: Beach break with a good wind protection.
Spot #3: Fun left wave.
Spot #4: Right point-break wave, Starts working only in special conditions, but when it does, it turns in to a perfect and powerful long wave.
La Bocana: Funny beach break. Only breaks with special conditions.
